When working in the field, scientists often have to get creative and think outside the box in order to capture the data they need. Check out the “Disc Cam” Grouper Moon scientists created this week. It was placed on a tripod right in the aggregation site. Its pretty awesome. How do you think this might help with the research being conducted here?
Hi Todd, are the cameras on a frisbee?
I think it will help with research because the cameras can capture all angles.
Yes and Yes!! You are correct! Good job Ben!!
I think they are trying to capture good video and see what the groupers are doing from every direction.
I think the disc cam is used to view 360 degree angles and to see the whole aggregation. To see and monitor all the fish at once.
I think the disc cam is used for counting fish by placing it in the middle of the site so they can see all around.
Excellent!! Good thinking girls!
I think the camera is just for seeing what’s going on in the reef and maybe see if there are any hurt animals.
I think they are using the disc cam to learn more about how the Groupers spawn without divers or humans being around since fish do react to people.
Exactly!!
The disc cam is another way to count Grouper other than sending a diver down to count manually.
Good guess, but it is used to get visual data on what is happening on the reef when the spawning occurs.
Can the cameras on the disc move up and down to capture the water column or can they only look out across the reef?
They are stationary cameras. They just see straight in front of them.
He has a Pegasus thruster!!!!!!!
why are the cameras facing down?
Are the cameras GoPros?
Yes they are! Good to see you yesterday, B!!
